Alternative Ethnographies

My undergraduate honors thesis is titled Alternative Ethnographies - Negotiating Identity in the Photography of Mahtab Hussain. The first work of scholarship on Hussain’s body of work, this thesis contextualizes Hussain’s photography within the context of colonial history, photography theory, and contemporary issues like Islamophobia and surveillance.

Christie’s Essays

As a graduate trainee at Christie’s, I wrote several lot essays and lot notes for the Indian, Himalayan, & Southeast Asian, South Asian Modern + Contemporary, and Modern & Impressionist department auction catalogues. Click here to see some of my contributions!

The City in the Mist

I originally wrote “The City in the Mist - Imagining Shanghai in Yang Yongliang’s Phantom Landscapes” for a Chinese Art course I took as a Visiting Student at the University of Oxford. After completing additional independent research, I rewrote it and won a research prize at my undergraduate university. It was also published in a peer-reviewed journal of undergraduate art history.
